Hidden chemicals in children's bath products
A US campaign group, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, has warned that many children’s bath products still contain potentially harmful chemicals.
They produced a report (
available here) which reveals that 61% of children’s shampoos, shower gels, body lotions and other toiletries contain the chemicals formaldeyhde and 1,4-dioxane.
Formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane are both believed to be possible carcinogens, whilst formaldehyde may also cause skin irritation and should not be present in children’s bath products, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics argues.
Parents cannot see whether their children’s bath products contain these chemicals, as they are not listed on the labels as being ingredients. This is because they are not put into products directly but instead can contaminate them. 1,4-dioxane is a byproduct of a chemical reaction, whilst formaldehyde comes about because of the break down of preservatives in bottles.
